What's your business, and who are your customers?

Gold Results' mission is to drive professional athletes and leading corporations to optimal performance by breaking down the components of each client's specific performance formula, optimizing each one, then stitching them seamlessly back together. The truth is that most teams, individuals, and organizations perform below their maximum potential. Although all our clients are already "really good," we help take them to "World Class."

Tell us about yourself

My business grew out of the intersection of my main passions: sports, the science of what drives human performance, and teaching. I love to teach and help people understand how to become better at their chosen craft by modeling what drives success.

My entire life, I've been in love with sports and performance and the challenge of seeing how to push the limits of what's possible. I have been doing martial arts for over 35 years, and I also played football (American football) until 2nd division level. I also tried my hand at competitive tennis. Anything where I could push myself. I often remember my football career and think if I knew then what I know now, I would have been able to go so much further. When I work with athletes as clients, it's like I'm helping my former self to not make those mistakes.

Then I discovered that businesses have so much to learn about the science of performance in sports, and I developed a model to help implement those principles in multinational companies. The results are amazing, and people "get it" quickly because almost everyone understands sports as a metaphor easily.

What drives me each day? I'd say it's our motto "Impossible just means no one has done it…YET!" I love being a part of achieving something people thought was not people..of pushing the limits of what's possible. I love helping clients discover they can go further than they thought, and I believe that I can make a contribution to making their lives better, and that's something that really matters to me. It's my "little dent in the universe," as Steve Jobs famously said.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think being able to go against industry tradition and become known as the "go-to" for optimal performance. We have strong convictions about what drives performance, based on 30 years of science and working in the trenches with athletes and multinational corporations, and we have become known for really moving the needle. As I always say, we don't want projects, we can't fans (clients who rave about us), and we're doing pretty well in that respect in both professional sports and with business leaders.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's definitely a lonely road, and you need to believe in what you're trying to build. I often say, believe beyond what any reasonable person would because that's the only way you're going to stand a chance of doing anything great and innovative. Also, that passion for your mission is essential to keep you going past the challenges and the moments when the only thing that keeps you going is a purpose greater than your fear.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, not everyone is cut to be an entrepreneur. That's neither good nor bad, just different. Being an entrepreneur has a lot of challenges and tough moments, so you need to feel the "positives" compensate enough in your personal balance sheet. I had a boss 30 years ago who told me I was a terrible employee, and he was right; I was made to drive for my dreams, not anyone else's. So I think the sleepless nights, long hours, and constant kicks in the face are worth it for you. If they're not, you can do great things working in a corporation.

Second, expect that you will need to get your hands dirty. I've seen many former execs with great CVs try to start a business and realize that they
lacked all the structure, brand, and inertia that a big company offers. You will spend a fair amount of time doing the less glamorous work. You need to lead by example. You can't expect to be CEO and have a team to do everything for you at the beginning (and later, when you grow and you CAN have that team, you'll find it's tough to stop being so involved, but it's essential you transition the model to grow).

Finally, realize that you probably won't get it right the first time. You may have to reinvent yourself and pivot several times. You will gain insights and understanding as you go, and that will allow you to develop a winning strategy, but most don't get it right away. Companies like Amazon, Facebook, etc., had to pivot from their initial focus. There's no shame in it. Actually, it's a sign of intelligence and a great entrepreneur. Just keep that mission front and center and never deviate from WHY you are doing it, but you will have to adapt the how.
