Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Hoffman, Founder of Bespoke Brows NYC, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an upscale, boutique eyebrow shaping salon that specializes in eyebrow waxing, tinting, tweezing, and lamination, as well as eyelash lifting and tinting. Our small service menu really allows us to hone our skills and be excellent at what we do, while our walk-in-only policy is great for busy NYers who want to cut out the drama of making appointments, dealing with running late, no show fees, having to cancel last minute, etc.

Tell us about yourself

I love eyebrows! I make brow contact before eye contact, and I wouldn't have it any other way; they just speak to me! It's amazing getting to do what I love every day and building a company that allows other estheticians to do what they love in a fun, professional, uplifting, and supportive environment.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think opening the business was the biggest accomplishment. Every achievement after that has been built on that first day, that first action that took an idea and made it into a reality. Countless planning hours, sleepless nights, and a big personal leap of faith lead to that first day. Everyone else just sees the lights go on, but you know that hours with attorneys, accountants, contractors, vision boards, etc., all go into making the first moment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding the life/work balance. When everything is on your plate, and other people's livelihoods are in your hands, it is very hard to disconnect because no matter where you are or what you are doing, you always feel like you could be doing more. But that's the fun of it; you build something that you can always find ways to improve, so you push yourself to improve. You are a better, stronger version of yourself after a year in business, four years in business, etc., and hopefully, your business reflects that as well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a plan.
  2. Be willing to learn as you go and pivot that plan.
  3. Assume everything will cost twice as much and take twice as long as you think it will when you make/change that plan.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be you, be authentic, and remember why you started your business. People connect with what is genuine and remember the perspective of your guest/customer. Aside from loving brows, I started Bespoke so people could find a place in the beauty industry where they could go to feel and look their best. The emphasis on how our guests feel above all else allows our team to remember to connect with their guests, uplift them, and focus on their overall experience, not just the end result. Hopefully, that transcends their service beyond just a brow wax into something that can make people take on the day as the best, bravest, and most confident versions of themselves.
