Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sirrita Rubiano, Owner of Bless Thy Skin, located in Pinellas Park, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bless Thy Skin is a beauty and wellness brand. We believe that skincare should be gentle yet effective. We create our all-natural products without toxins and with melanin skin in mind. We often find that brands don’t typically make skincare all-inclusive, rendering them virtually useless for African American skin. We want to change that while keeping our products affordable.

Our mission is to provide an affordable and non-toxic skincare solution that is gentle yet effective with melanin-rich skin in mind.

Tell us about yourself

I launched Bless Thy Skin in 2020 with my oldest daughter. This was after my lupus diagnosis, which I received in 2017. Prior to my diagnosis, I began to notice a huge change in my skin and how it would react to certain products. We decided that there was a better way to care for our skin without the toxins and harsh chemicals founds in the products we were currently using. As a licensed esthetician, I split my focus between treating client skin concerns through my services with creating a natural at-home skincare option.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our successful rebrand was a huge accomplishment for us. We were able to fine-tune our business and make it even better than before. Also, the fact that we’ve been in business for three years is a huge accomplishment as a small business!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Creating brand recognition is really hard for a small business owner. You can often feel like you don’t have the popularity that larger companies and/or celebrities and popular influencers have; therefore, it can be challenging. This can make it hard to grow and actually stay in business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I would tell anyone looking to start a business to:

  1. Learn your craft! Don’t ever stop being a student because there is always more to learn.
  2. Create a business plan and be very detailed with your business intentions. Also, apply for tons of grants to avoid using your own money as much as possible.
  3. Market! Market! Market! Step outside of your comfort zone, network as much as possible, and market your business!
