What's your business, and who are your customers?

Books & Nooks is an online bookstore that sells our signature product, Book Bundles. My Book Bundles are beautifully curated gift boxes that contain a book of your choice from our bookshelf, a journal, a bling pen, and other specially selected items from local shops and Canadian makers. Our focus demographic is women of all ages and book lovers, of course, and we believe in strong community ties and supporting local businesses and Canadian writers.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Assumpta Davis, working mom, wife, and owner of Books & Nooks. I created Books & Nooks because I wanted to share my passion for reading, writing, and my love of chic accessories and fashion. My two little girls, Ella and Emma, have adopted my passion for reading and writing and inspire and motivate me daily to be the best version of myself; they truly give me the push I need to keep going and get this business to the next level. I also want Books & Nooks to be a platform for Canadian authors, women makers, and entrepreneurs to showcase their amazing talents and products. I believe in women supporting each other and helping one another to achieve success in business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment as a business owner is developing a product that our customers truly love. Our Book Bundles are very popular, and a lot of our sales are from repeat customers who love the Book Bundles so much that they come back and buy it for their family and friends or another one for themselves.

Since we launched the Book Bundles in 2018, we have expanded from one bundle to many themed Book Bundles, and their popularity continues to grow.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is being patient. When I first launched Books and Nooks, I literally had three sales and almost gave up - fast forward three years later, and I am getting more sales than I can keep up with. If I could go back in time, I would definitely remind myself that running a business is a marathon and not a sprint.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient - You are not going to be successful overnight.
  2. Be confident- Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and believe in your ideas.
  3. Put the work in, invest in yourself, and don't be afraid to fail.
