Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brad Hay, Founder of Brad Hay - Inner Revolution, located in Ocean Shores, NSW, Australia.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Brad Hay - Inner Revolution is essentially a school and practice in the Eastern Sciences of Ayurvedic Medicine, Classical and Tantric Hatha Yoga. My clients and students are those who desire to optimize the way they live and operate in every aspect of their life. My role within this industry is to take the comprehensive and sometimes complex teachings of these powerful, ancient sciences and make them digestible, relatable, and exceptionally useful for people in our modern lifestyles. The aim, on one level, is to enhance physical and mental health/performance, and on another, to cultivate inner awareness and spiritual connection that brings about a deep sense of belonging and fulfillment in life.

My programs are designed to both educate people with the wisdom of these ancient sciences, and offer a multitude of tools and methodologies that include functional body movement exercises, breathing techniques, focus and meditation training, self-awareness exercises, thought re-programming, deep relaxation, and much more. I offer workshops, intensive master training, teacher training, and private consulting both in-person and online. I am currently based in Australia and travel nationally and internationally to teach these programs.

Tell us about yourself

I was eventually led to this type of work and profession through my own experience of suffering and self-destruction. In my late twenties, I had hit the wall hard after years of drug and alcohol abuse and lifestyles that were driving me into a deep dark hole. I was also working in a profession that wasn't fulfilling or enjoyable for me.

I was 27 years old, and I was extremely determined to transform my life, so I sought the most intensive rehabilitation program in the country and started the process of healing there. This led me to these incredibly effective teachings, and I never looked back. I knew I wanted to learn as much as I could and then eventually help other people going through similar things in life; soon after, I moved to the USA and began years of studying the leading teachers and schools in the world in these fields. I wanted to be exceptional at this work. Twenty-three years later, I have created a full-time career out of what fulfills me and also what feels like a meaningful service to humanity. As an entrepreneur, what motivates me is knowing that people are benefiting from the service I offer.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was taking the leap from a career that was not fulfilling to me to one that feels much more in alinement with my deeper purpose in help people. Another recent accomplishment was quickly turning my business into an online platform in 2020 when the pandemic began. I had one of the most fruitful years of business in my career.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, one of the challenges of being a business owner is constantly having to think about what's next. How am I going to keep things going? How do I keep adapting to the constant radical changes the world is experiencing lately? Not being able to switch off for very long.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you have some kind of love or passion for what you are doing.
  2. Get help with the things you're not great at!! I have tried doing it all myself a number of times. Don't do it!
  3. Cultivate consistency and resilience. It's not always going to be smooth running. Learn to ride out the bumps and stay focused on the intention.
