What's your business, and who are your customers?

We're a traditional Japanese bakery founded in 1977 serving healthy & high-quality baked goods in Hawaii. Our customers are anyone who loves the smell and taste of fresh bread when it comes out of the oven.

Tell us about yourself

I was born in Leon, Spain, and I've always been fascinated by Japanese food and culture. My wife Miho (from Tokyo) specializes in Global Food Business. We have lived in Hawaii together for eight years now. We work tirelessly raising our two families, one at home and the BRUG Ohana, in the stores.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We're loved and trusted by the local community. People in Hawaii are very sincere. You have to be always honest, transparent, and humble. If you follow the Hawaii way, you could be granted the opportunity of other accomplishments. That's why we believe that trust in BRUG as a brand it's our most precious accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

My wife Miho (as CEO) always says (and I agree) that decision-making's loneliness is hard. For me, the pressure of making decisions that affect other's people's lives is the hardest thing. But, if something goes wrong, you have to take responsibility.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Find something you love doing, and you're good at it, and start. Don't overthink. But please, make sure not to put all your eggs in the same basket. It's tough to succeed the first time you try. You have to be ready to deal with the possibility that business could go wrong the first time you try.
