What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Catt Editing. I am a nonfiction book editor, and I work with self-publishing authors. I have many first-time authors as clients, and I love taking them through the whole process. It's so exciting to be part of making someone's lifelong dream come true!
Tell us about yourself
Growing up, I was a spelling bee kid, a grammar nerd, and a bookstore lover. After COVID-19 left me furloughed, I proofread a document for my dad's business. Then something clicked, and I realized I could be an editor. So I got trained and opened up shop! I love running my own business and deciding what I get to do every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Honestly, I feel so proud of myself for being able to support myself financially with my business. I didn't know if it was a realistic goal, but after two years, I had already done it! My goal is to support my family with my business, but I'm not quite there yet.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Work-life balance is such a struggle for me. I feel like I'm always on call, and if I don't respond to an email quickly enough, I'll lose business. I'm still working on setting boundaries there.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- It's a numbers game. You have to fail so many times before you can succeed.
- Network! I know that's a gross word, but it has helped me so much to find other people in my field to who I can refer clients to. They end up referring to me as well, and it becomes a little community!
- You run your business, do not let your business run you. (I'm still working on this one).
