Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Sasso, Founder of Chicago Lashes Inc., located in Skokie, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business focuses on producing High-quality eyelash extension services using individual eyelash extensions and hand-made fans for volume eyelashes from natural to mega volume eyelash extensions. We have a high volume of returning clients because we have a staff who have been with us between 2-8 years. You can count on seeing your stylist month after month. Our staff is continuously doing training to learn the new methods and technology in the industry. We treat every customer like family.

Tell us about yourself

Chicago Lashes, Inc has been open for 12 years. Originally I worked in corporate America, and like a lot of people, I was always trying to find ways to make extra money. I tried to sell so many things from makeup, jewelry, and Tupperware; you name it. My husband, who did advertising on the side, suggested that I try eyelash extensions. He said that I like makeup, so I maybe could be good at this. I took classes at the time and practiced with all his coworkers at home. I later went on to get my Cosmetology License. I traveled to many different suburbs after work and on the weekends from South Loop to Lockport. My phone was constantly ringing in 2010, and we knew it was time to open a very small location. And Chicago Lashes was born.

I love doing what I do. Coming to work every day is great because I get to make people look beautiful and feel good about themselves. I have a great staff so going to work is like being with friends who have your back. We are a team.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was to grow my business. Taking the plunge into opening a second location was a big deal and getting out of my comfort zone. Sadly we had to close our city location due to Covid and the mounting bills. It was the right time. But our second location in Skokie is thriving. So a second location could be possible in the future.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is assembling a good solid team to work with. Finding people who are the right fit is really important for a small business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your niche and start small. You don't need a grandiose storefront and large business loans to start a business.
  2. Make sure the business can support itself. Suppose you have to get loans without having the clientele/audience come to your business; probably not a good idea.
  3. Expand your business when you are ready and have created a good flagship location. Expanding before you are ready could mean the downfall of your entire operation.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Love what you do! Continue to take training classes as technology and tools are always advancing. You will have a more rewarding business if you do.
