What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sondra Financial Services, LLC is a licensed consulting business in the metro area of Philadelphia. I have a pretty eclectic base of customers, but my main clients are minority women, primarily Caribbean and African women.

Tell us about yourself

My grandmother was the one who started it all. She involved me in her business, and since then, I have always dreamed of being my own boss one day. The challenges of running a day-to-day business, seeking solutions to problems, and creating something concrete from an idea, all those intangible things that come with a business, are almost intoxicating to me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Seeing women that I coached running their own businesses. Watching a naive, fearful beginner morph into an excellent business owner confident in her capabilities. That alone always makes that journey worthwhile.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The vitriol from rival entrepreneurs sometimes is unexpected, but I welcome the challenge that comes with it. I thrive on proving people wrong in their negativity about me; it motivates me to be at my best. That's why my motto is " only I can challenge me."

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't ever, ever quit. Greatness is only achieved through overcoming failures.
  2. Reject the naysayers. Dream big, and one day you will prove them wrong.
  3. Be willing to work hard. A business is not a 9-5. If your goal is to make it easy for yourself, you have already failed.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Please make sure you have a solid business foundation. Hire competent help because trying to do everything yourself will hinder the growth of your business.
