What's your business, and who are your customers?
Claremont Management Group provides human resource consulting and training services for businesses and industry groups. I have worked with businesses of all sizes and have helped many families and start-up businesses. At the same time, I have spoken for industry groups throughout the United States on important HR issues.
Tell us about yourself
I have my first business in college. I worked my way through grad school as a real estate salesperson. Since then, I have been a landlord and a corporate attorney. After going into private law practice, I set up CMG with an insurance agent, Tom Timmins, in 1989. Around 1995, I bought Tom's interest in CMG and have operated the firm since then. I work 7 days a week and pride myself on responding to clients and industry representatives on the same day if at all possible. I do not need any external motivation. My satisfaction comes from positive results over 40 years.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
CMG has been in business since 1989. Few small businesses can last that long. I had never missed a rent payment when I was a tenant or a mortgage payment since I bought my own office.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I find marketing a challenge. Social media has not made that job any easier, in my opinion.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a solid business plan.
- Be ready to market your business. Little happens without your getting out there and bringing it in the door.
- Have enough cash or credit to make it for at least a year without a positive cash flow.
