What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Counselor & Coach. I work with adults who are ready to grow, change and make the most of their life. Most people get 'stuck' at some point in life, lacking direction, clarity, or motivation. I help individuals find their spark and move forward in their life with confidence.
Tell us about yourself
I worked for decades for other organizations that had great missions I could believe in but always felt hampered by the volumes of computer work/documentation that prevented me from working more effectively with the clientele. Documentation is important within the scope of work with clients; however, as a Private Practice Clinician, I found a way to streamline the busy work, which frees me to be more present for a larger amount of time with the client - actually doing the work with them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is learning how to set up the processes to run my business that streamlines the 'running' of the business: processes such as the Creation & Utilization of a Client Tracking System that captures all aspects of my growth and stats monthly creation of New Client Scripts that outline what I am going to say to encourage new clients to see the value of counseling and schedule their first session Creation of a virtual workspace that has two monitors: one for the video session and the second monitor for completing the progress note of the session, simultaneously - to name just a few processes.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about being a business owner is wearing all of the 'hats' that are worn by a number of people in a larger company. As more profit was made, I learned what I could do effectively within the business and then delegated to other professionals what was not really in my wheelhouse, like accounting and tax preparation.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be clear on your 'why' for starting your own business
it's going to be hard work, so be clear! - Create a Simple Business Plan that becomes the electronic document that captures all the steps you will need to complete over time to be successful.
- Surround yourself with other professionals who have already started a similar business and learn from them!
