Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Eugenie George, MBA, CFEI, a personal finance & business writer and podcaster based in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a copywriting business. I work with financial firms, coaches, and counselors to write personal finance content. I also write timely pieces around race, class, and personal finance.

Tell us about yourself

I am a recovering workaholic striving to heal my childhood wounds. I like writing about unique things, and I'm in a space where I have a unique opportunity to do that. I'm not sure what motivates me on a day to day, because I've always been a worker bee. I think I am motivated to work so that I can relax.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I get to write new content that has never been written before. That's pretty awesome. Finance is an industry that hasn't dabbled too much with the other social sciences, so it's pretty cool to get paid to bridge ideas together.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Saying no. I like trying lots of things, so I have to constantly ask myself: Does what I am doing benefit me, or is it benefiting other businesses? As a former workaholic, I would take all business, but I wasn't good at all of the skills, so I would waste time learning something new for someone else's benefit. I had to narrow my services and products and feel comfortable in my abilities to do that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Go to therapy.
  2. Write in a journal.
  3. Figure out how you can pay yourself a wage sooner than later.
