What's your business, and who are your customers?

Fortify Fitness offers gym membership and fitness training. My clients are corporate and business professionals.

Tell us about yourself

I was an athlete in high school and college. I had some injuries which led to rehab for fitness and to a better understanding of the human body. I started my personal training career in Los Angeles and have been doing it for 25 years.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Securing location at a highly sought-after corporate incubator site. We cater to the tenants of the building and the local community as well.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Making time for the things that you don't love - such as administration, marketing, and promotion, while maintaining the activities that you do love - such as working directly with clients and my personal fitness program.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Identify the skills that you are best at and how you can help others with those skills.
  2. Identify the skills that you are not good at and find help from someone who is.
  3. Always remember how and why you got into the business and find staff to duplicate and scale your efforts. Don't try to do it all yourself!
