Tell us about yourself
I started my coaching and practice, recognizing that even the smartest people are not typically capable of articulating a value proposition that will be memorable and relevant to a prospective employer or business partner. I find that people benefit tremendously when they can own and articulate their specific contributions that have made a positive difference. Knowing your true value is the first step toward developing self-confidence. From here, I teach clients what the current behavioral science research shows and what it takes to become "top talent." these are the people who are typically sought after for raises, promotions, and leadership roles. I find helping people maximize their potential for success incredibly rewarding.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been consistently enabling people to recognize their particular contributions and learn to communicate their accomplishments, so they get recognized and rewarded. The art of telling one's business story is not typically taught in academia. This is a very particular skill, and people find it empowering once they have a clear narrative about their value. I also love working with people who are desirous of becoming inspiring leaders. My gratification also comes when clients tell me they have created motivated teams and improved their organization's culture so people love coming to work.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is scheduling people who have urgency for coaching. I find myself having a difficult time saying no to anyone who I know really has a growth mindset, and I will work on Sundays if necessary.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure you have identified a niche that has not been fully exploited and that you have a distinctive value proposition.
- You don't have to reinvent the wheel. Learn from others and be the fast second.
- Create your business around the demand versus around your personal interests. When launching a business, your customer's needs come first, and when you find the intersection between your customer's needs and your interest, that's the sweet spot… That's where you have a potential business.
- Create a psychologically safe culture that supports your employees, so they want to come to work.
