Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Regina Bauscher, owner of Honey Sweetie Acres, located in Goshen, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business is holistic skincare based on botanicals and goat milk. We make "clean" products for those with sensitive skin, avoiding parabens, acrylates, phthalates, formaldehyde, etc. Our customers are concerned with what is found in commercial cosmetic products today. They want products that bring healthy results for their skin.

Tell us about yourself

I used to work for a company that made ingredients for Loreal and Estee Lauder. I did not like what I saw and began formulating for my own family years ago. My husband had a skin condition that dermatologists were unable to help. Within 30 days of using our goat milk soap, his condition disappeared and never returned. We now provide products to sensitive-skinned customers nationwide, and seeing the results that our products bring is motivating.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

A very high customer return rate and sales in all 50 states within a short period of time. Also raising 3 National Champion Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats from our own herd. We produce our own goat milk for our products, but national recognition for the herd was a big achievement.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Dealing with the things that do not further the products. Taxes in all 50 states, FDA regulations, Ohio Small Business regulations, credit card management, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research the product you want to develop to be sure you can differentiate yourself from the rest of the market.
  2. Hire professionals to do what you are not trained in. You will save time and money.
  3. Be prepared to work more than 40 hours per week and on weekends in the beginning. It takes time and patience, but the journey will be worth it if you love what you do.
