Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brandi Powell, founder of Village of the Valley, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder of a 501(c)(3) in Phoenix called Village of the Valley. We help women who've experienced abuse to heal through our 12-month personal growth program.

Tell us about yourself

I am a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault. As I began to heal from the abuse and the effects it left behind, I knew that I had a deep passion to walk with others who were doing the same kind of work. Fifteen years after starting my journey, I have had numerous women by my side. We have journeyed the roads to healing together in some incredible ways. It wasn't until 2017 that I turned my passion into a larger organization where I could help more women.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

By the end of 2022, we will have had almost 90 women who have completed our program and have made tremendous personal growth for themselves and their families. Our program is so effective that 70% of our clients are referrals from other women who graduated from the program and want others to find the same growth they've had.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balance. Always balance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Listen to your intuition...always!
  2. Reach out for help when you don't know what to do. There's no shame in asking for help.
  3. Surround yourself with a diverse group and listen, with discernment, to their feedback.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't hold tightly to the way you've always done it. Be open to change and new ideas.
