What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is live online writing sessions for women writers. It is an online platform designed to help women writers turn their literary dreams into reality through accountability, connection, and goal setting. My membership includes 2-1 hour live online writing sessions per week, access to the Writing Studio community, and members-only access to a private FB group to share literary resources, celebrate wins, and promote each member's writing services & platforms.

Tell us about yourself

At nineteen years old, I felt a calling in my life to write a book. Without the life experience yet to fill its pages, I went on to graduate from the University of South Florida with a BA in psychology and studied language at the University of Madrid.

With more than 150 articles published, I wrote for 15+ years as a journalist and freelance writer for publications including The Floridian Magazine, Gage Publishing, and Bliss Magazine. After taking a 10-year break to raise three children in Florida with my husband, Tim, I recently returned to the literary world and am currently working on an upcoming memoir that I pray speaks directly to the hearts of those who need to hear it most.

As a writer, mom, wife, and business owner, finding time to complete my memoir was close to impossible until I joined an online writing session. The results were immediate. The simple act of putting myself on the schedule changed it all. It took my dream of finishing my book and turned it into a short-term goal. This was my inspiration for creating live online writing sessions - to help women writers accomplish their goals, one session at a time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as an online business owner has been learning to replace perfection with action. With technology, I had to learn how to operate successfully behind the scenes, and that meant, at times, that getting it done was more important than getting it done perfectly. Launching a business has so many components; prioritizing from the beginning is important.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

If I had to choose, one of the hardest things about becoming a business owner is finding balance. I have a true passion for writing and a heart for this business, so, at times, it is hard to put it down. Finding the balance between work, family, and friends is important so I can enjoy being fully present for everyone.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top three tips for anyone looking to start a business today:

  1. Choose an idea for starting a business that is aligned with an area you are passionate about. Serving your target audience each day will not only enrich their lives but will allow you to teach from a place that makes a difference.
  2. Online businesses are the way of the future - so if you are beginning a business today, making it an online company will ensure you are in line with what is ahead of you.
  3. The world moves quickly and has a lot to offer. In order to achieve success, stay focused only on the simplest items that are needed to succeed. Avoid distractions from the start, and effective business routines will be in place for your future.
