Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amber Mason, Owner of Joy Collective LLC., located in Missouri Valley, IA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a dance studio in Missouri Valley, IA. I have kids from 3 years old all the way through high school. I also have a few adult classes specifically designed for parents who want to exercise while having some fun dancing and grooving together.

Tell us about yourself

I have been dancing since I could walk/remember. Anytime my parents would ask me what my dreams were, it was always to open up my own dance studio someday. Now that I am living my dream, I couldn't imagine doing anything else. Seeing my students grow, learn new skills, and succeed is what gets me out of bed and motivates me to continue pouring out what I have learned in this industry to the next generation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This past year we were able to complete our 2nd annual dance recital. It was amazing to see all of my kid's growth on stage from just a couple of years of dance with me. I was amazed and brought to tears seeing how much improvement had been made and the joy on each of their faces as they showcased what they had learned all year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The details and keeping everything organized. I have always been a perfectionist, but now having a new baby makes it very difficult to keep track of everything. Keeping my priorities where they need to be is very difficult sometimes but always worth it in the end. Thank goodness for assistants; that's all I have to say ;)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Your customers are always right, even when the situation maybe is out of your control or not your fault. Keeping your customers informed and at ease is very important.
  2. Have goals set for each week? I sit down each Monday and set specific goals. I have a 90-minute goal for each day, one big goal for the week, and 3 future goals I want to start working on. Sometimes, I get lost in the details or overwhelmed by the big picture and everything that is on my plate. However, when I sit down each Monday and give myself goals for the week (that are achievable and prioritized well), it makes life much more enjoyable. It also helps the tasks you need done right away to get done but also allows you to dream a bit into the future as well.
  3. Lastly, keep Jesus first in your life. I know this may be harder said than done and maybe a little controversial, but I know when I sit down with Jesus every morning before I do anything else, it sets up my day for success.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I am very grateful for what I have and for the small town of Missouri Valley that has so graciously welcomed me in like family. It has been a pleasure serving them, and I am excited to continue on. We do still have registrations open for this season if anyone is interested in joining our dance family. Joy Collective also just opened an events service specifically designed for weddings. We take the planning off of your shoulders but not out of your hands.
