Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in videography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katia Repina, Owner of Katia Repina Films, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a wedding videographer. My approach to weddings is a mix of editorial and photojournalistic. It’s elegant, cinematic, emotive, and fresh. My customers are young spirits no matter their age; they are intelligent, creative, joyful, and have a great style. I have been very lucky with the clients I've had an opportunity to work with. They are my inspiration.

Tell us about yourself

I am a documentary photographer and filmmaker based in NYC. My documentary work has been published in a variety of international media, including The New York Times, TIME, The Washington Post, Vogue, Daily Mail, and Dazed and Confused Magazine. My short films have been screened and exhibited in Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Canada, Cambodia, Germany, France, Malaysia, Italy, Spain, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, UK, and The U.S. When I moved to NYC from Barcelona more than 6 years ago I started first as a wedding photographer and slowly transitioned into wedding videography. I have witnessed so many beautiful, tender, and magical moments as a photographer and I felt that video would be such a beautiful medium to capture the connection of loved ones.

Receiving people's feedback on my work and seeing their joy motivates me to keep doing this. I sincerely love people and feel very excited to capture the magic of unexpected moments on a wedding day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting to work with so many wonderful people. I attract the right clients who see weddings the way I do. There are so many ways to create a wedding video and so many approaches. Being clear about what my vision is and being able to transmit it to new clients and wedding planners is the key.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Multitasking and knowing how to do it all. I am literally an octopus haha. I am always learning to delegate and rely on experts in each field to be able to make my business better.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your strong and weak points and ask for help.
  2. Be grateful for opportunities, be easy to work with, and share instead of competing. Being a generous and nice person to work and collaborate with, will bring you steps ahead.
  3. Remember to have fun along the way!
