Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and fashion but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katya Gudaeva, a professional makeup artist, based in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a freelance makeup artist working with talents on set and with private clientele. I also own an agency called the Bridal Beauty Agency, representing other makeup and hair artists.

Tell us about yourself

My journey in the beauty industry began as a hobby in 2010. While I was getting a master's degree in Economics, I couldn't help but feel unhappy in the finance field. The decision to pursue makeup as a career was made upon graduation from college.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I moved to the United States 10 years ago and started my own business from scratch in a foreign country, and it has been growing consistently year after year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I'm sure every business owner will tell you that there is no such thing as a day off or real vacation. I'm working 24/7 year-round; I have to be available for last-minute changes and quick responses to my clients and artists. Even when I'm on vacation, my day starts with an hour of remote work (e-mail responses, booking management, etc.).

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

It depends on the type of business, of course, and your experience. Bookkeeping and financial planning are the backbones of any business; get organized. You have to love and be obsessed with your business and the subject; keep the passion fire going. Build a team of like-minded people. Your business is as good as your employees/your team.
