Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and career development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dexter Kunaka, Founder of Kunaka Coaching, located in Littlehampton, United Kingdom.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Life, Career, and Executive Coach. I serve leaders of all levels, career changers or transitioners, and affiliated helping professionals to reflect, find balance in their lives and grow forwards. My experience also includes a variety of coaching clients from within tech, charity organisations, and universities.

Tell us about yourself

Coaching found me, in a roundabout way. I studied Psychology and loved working with young people in schools and then in their communities, developing social action projects. I discovered the careers world by Happenstance and decided to study again, this time around psychology and Coaching, and the rest was history. I'm motivated to support my clients with similar backgrounds and experiences in shifting their perspectives and developing actions for incremental gains, leading to big positive changes. Being coached was equally as powerful for me in my career and life as mentoring or being managed by others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest success happens every time a client says, "I didn't think about it like that until I said it out loud." Increased revenue and recognition are great, but I love hearing how our coaching sessions have changed or transformed someone's life.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Getting started was the hardest bit, taking the leap when stepping into the unknown and trusting that you will be okay, if not phenomenal. Knowing if I was doing things correctly, e.g., website, marketing, etc. But, being your own boss means you have to create time to nurture and develop your business, keep doing the things or use the skills which got you there in the first place.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Never stop listening to the little voice in your head and your gut feeling that got you started on this journey.
  2. Learn how to do it for yourself first before you pay someone else to do it for you.
  3. Pivots are powerful, full of new opportunities and lessons. Embrace a pivot and know to try a new direction if something isn't working!
