Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kerry Boys, Co-Founder of Leaders for Good, located in Sydney, NSW, AU.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Leaders for Good is a diversity, equity, and inclusion specialist. Working across the Asia Pacific, we help organisations build fair and high-performance places where people want to work. Our customers range from some of APACs largest brands to government departments to start-ups and not-for-profits.

Tell us about yourself

I’m all about making a positive impact. While working in Cambodia in 2020, I saw how much difference businesses could make when they focused on their people and their local communities, as well as profit. Not only do we help organisations do that by being more inclusive, but we also donate 50% of our profits to equity-driven organisations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

By far, my biggest accomplishment was being able to donate almost $AU200k to some amazing organisations in our first year of business as Leaders for Good. Seeing the impact, those organisations can make towards economic empowerment and driving equity is amazing. I feel both proud and grateful to be able to work with such great people who are making such a difference.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a small business owner, one of the hardest things has been having to do everything - from working with big clients to managing admin. We are lucky to be at a place now where we have a wonderful team in place, where we all get to work on the areas we are great at and the things we love (most of the time!)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just get started - your business after 12 months is very unlikely to be exactly the same as when you started. Given that things will change, don’t spend too long getting positioned, etc. Absolutely perfect. Do something and get it into customers' hands - they will help you shape it.
  2. It’s all about the people - find and work with people who love what you do as much as you do. The positive energy and momentum this creates are contagious!
  3. Consider impact - ask yourself how you can make a positive difference in the world. Consider your product/service, the people in your team, society more broadly, and the environment. Every organisation has the potential to make a huge positive impact.
