What's your business, and who are your customers?
We offer personalized makeup sessions that leave our clients looking and feeling their absolute best! We offer makeup lessons, hair, and makeup for weddings, photo sessions, and special events. Our typical client is either not a makeup wearer or desires a natural look.
Tell us about yourself
I discovered my love for makeup artistry after having my own makeup applied professionally for the first time. I began by practicing on myself and friends and reading makeup artistry books by the professionals. As my makeup skills grew, the idea of a career in the field grew as well! I jumped at the opportunity to work as a makeup artist at MAC Cosmetics and spent three years there advancing my techniques and makeup kit. I left to start Makeup By Tatum, and with love for MAC, I still use their product today.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
While starting and building my business, I worked another job for many years. No longer needing that other job and what I always called my "safety net," that felt like a true entrepreneurial success.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being a business owner takes another level of discipline and self-motivation that working for someone does not require. You are solely responsible for your success and failures and must be completely accountable.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just start. Of course, have a plan and an idea of your direction, but there will be a lot of trial and error no matter what.
- Love what you do. If you're not passionate about your business, you can't expect anyone else to be.
- Work hard and work smart.
