Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tina Greenbaum, Founder of Mastery Under Pressure LLC, located in Emeryville, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called Mastery Under Pressure. I teach high-performing executives and their teams the skills that Olympic-level athletes and professional performers use to manage their emotions in high-stakes and high-pressured environments.

Tell us about yourself

I recognized, early on, that my traditional psychotherapy training was inadequate. I noticed that clients could talk about their issues, but they were not skillful in utilizing mind/body tools that could dramatically improve their performance. Being a teacher at heart, I went on a personal, professional, and spiritual journey to understand how those hidden parts of ourselves presented themselves. Once I learned a new technique or strategy, I could then teach my clients. After 39 years, I'm more inspired than ever to train people to do my work - because it works and changes lives. We need a lot of help right now. Good mental health is not a natural sport; it's a learned sport. If everyone learned these skills, the world would be a better place.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In addition to starting five private practices from scratch, creating an online program, writing a book, and being a speaker on stage and numerous podcasts, my biggest accomplishment is sharing my work on a TEDx stage.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Living with uncertainty is one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner. You are 100% responsible for the success or failure of your business, and, especially in the early years, you don't quite know what to expect.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your genius and let that be your primary responsibility.
  2. Gather a team of people who love doing what you don't.
  3. Get good coaching. You don't know what you don't know. Find someone who's been successful and can guide you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Once you understand the different aspects of a successful business and have the support you need, it is the most satisfying way to earn a living. I haven't worked for anyone in 39 years, and I never will. I wouldn't trade my profession or the autonomy I have been able to achieve for all the money in the world.
