Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Negendank, Founder of Love Heal Grow, located in Sacramento, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Love Heal Grow is a relationship-focused trauma-informed therapy practice in Northern California. We provide psychotherapy services to adult individuals and couples. We specialize in relationship counseling, sex therapy, and therapy for trauma and anxiety.

Tell us about yourself

I had the idea to one day open a relationship-focused therapy center while I was in grad school studying to become a therapist. I spent years studying, creating my business plans, and working in wonderful positions that gave me the experience I still use today. I opened Love Heal Grow the month I became licensed. I'm motivated each day by the change we make in the lives of people in our community.

I know from personal and professional experience that when we heal from painful past experiences and learn how to connect deeply in our current relationships, there is a ripple effect that touches every aspect of our life and each person around us. I really believe that we are changing our community for the better each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far has been opening our new building, which houses our center, in 2021. We grew exponentially that year, and now we have a beautiful and comfortable space where our therapists see hundreds of clients a month. It feels like home!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

When something goes "wrong," or a crisis emerges that I wasn't expecting, it can create a momentary panic feeling. In my first few years of owning the business, these moments would cause me to worry that I was doing something wrong.

Now I know that this is a normal part of owning a business and that asking for support from experts and colleagues, seeking resources, and putting one foot in front of the other will get you through just about anything. Sometimes it's smooth sailing, and sometimes you're working 60-hour weeks and up all night—but in the end, it balances out, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get clear on your "why"—why are you creating this business? You'll need to turn your attention back to your why every time you feel the desire to give up.
  2. Get clear on your offer—don't try to give all things to all people.
  3. Get clear on your brand—what makes you different? What makes you special?
