Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental health, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leanne Rose Dorish, the founder of My NICU Family, located in British Columbia, Canada.

Tell us all about your business...

I provide mental health support, self-care tools, and overall well-being tricks with families who have had an infant in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, as well as the organizations that support those families.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a business owner?

I have been a mental health counselor focusing on trauma for 7 years before my son, Skye, was born 9-weeks early, which was not a fluke. However, being a counselor did not prepare me for what is needed to be a preemie Mama who watched her son struggle for 2 months in a NICU.

After we graduated from the NICU, life didn't really get any easier, and one day, sitting on the couch feeding Skye, I felt so alone. Everything I thought about life before his birth had turned upside-down or inside-out. That's when I decided to share my journey and utilize my therapeutic skills to help others walking a similar path.

My motivation now, 7 years later, comes from Skye. He is a walking miracle like all of our babies are. And yet, the connection he shows me is what every parent, grandparent, and family or friend feels. If someone feels alone or weighed down by the responsibilities that come with being the guardian or helper of a NICU/premature baby as they grow, I want them to know I am here to hold space for them.

I am lucky to have loving family and friends around me. But talking and sharing with someone who is on a NICU journey is priceless.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping others and seeing how their lives and their family's lives change even from just one conversation.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur?

You often feel alone because you don't have staff parties or other teammates nearby to go for tea and a walk with. Also, many friends and family don't fully understand why you're doing what you're doing. :)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

Follow your heart, dream big, and never give up!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I'm grateful to all who read this. Please reach out. I love to chat, and I'm always available. Even if you don't see the path clearly in front of you, never lose sight of your end dreams!
