Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Raquel Casalena Cosden, Founder of My Brilliant Coach, LLC., located in Ellicott City, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a career and leadership development coach. I work with clients who are seeking to enhance their current career or plan for a future next step. I work with clients on transitioning into leadership, taking steps for career advancement, or identifying career transitions. My clients work in a variety of industries, from tech start-ups to Fortune 500 companies, and range from employees in their early careers to mid or late-career. It is never a bad time for career planning!

Tell us about yourself

My background is in Human Resources, and I have spent many years as a recruiter and manager of talent services working in academia, private industry, and the federal government. I have always loved helping people find the right career fit and helping companies match with talent. I am a certified coach with the International Coaching Federation and hold a Master's degree in Organizational Development.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting my coaching business and working with clients from all over the world.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having time to market and stay current on social media. There is a lot of competition for business and attention, so you need to continuously provide relevant content to attract clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Put yourself in the company of other business owners in your field, establish a website and secure your domain name, and hire an accountant to learn the intricacies of taxes for a small business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

It can be both challenging and fulfilling to start your own business. I kept my full-time job in the beginning to test the market and take the pressure off of having to cover my salary. Also, realize that the business and marketing side is a large part of the company, not just doing what you love.
