Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Caroline Blazovsky, CEO and Founder of My Healthy Home, located in Whitehouse Station, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Incorporated in 2003, the company provides residential consumers with methods and products to help create healthier living spaces. The services allow customers to test their homes for contaminants that may be causing health-related complaints. Additionally, the company provides solutions to fixing bad building practices, environmental hazards, poor water quality, and other unhealthy home conditions.

Tell us about yourself

I began the business in early 2000 when I saw the need for answers to an unexplained allergic condition. I saw that many homes with water damage and mold growth on the walls had occupants who complained of health issues. I began testing homes for mold when at the time, no causal relationship was recognized. I helped homeowners find answers to health complaints that seemed to be caused by poor building conditions in their homes. Each day, it motivates me to take new clients and improve their health by changing their living environments for the better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my biggest accomplishments was being able to create 2 national brands. I founded and created the company My Healthy Home, as well as a DIY home mold and allergen test kit, the Examinair.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are a lot of time-consuming tasks, maintaining personnel, accounting, social media, marketing, and customer support; you have to wear a lot of different hats. Make sure to know your business inside and out. Many other business owners were left helpless if someone left the company or did not follow through with something. Don't rely completely on others; make sure you always have a backup plan. It is your business, and at the end of the day, you need to ensure its success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The job of running a business is mercurial. It changes every day and grows. Be ready to change and grow with the business. It will take you on a journey, and you will never end up in the same place you started. Be open-minded to new ideas and new ventures. An entrepreneur is always on the cutting edge, so you have to be forward-thinking and willing to dip your toes into uncharted territory. You have to try new things to be successful, some will fail, and some will be a home run. Be open to failure; it will make you stronger and smarter.
