Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jordan Betts, Director and Co-Owner of Need + Co., located in Rochester, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Need + Co. offers education to help guide beauty providers to create successful businesses in authentic harmony with their lifestyles. Learning with our experts is a choice to be part of a growing community that's invested in cultivating good energy in the styling chair and the overall beauty industry.

We believe hairstylists have the capacity to change our world by creating a kinder and more loving beauty industry. By focusing on harmony in their personal and business lives, providers can grow their business according to their own version of success. When providers are supported in their own personal journeys, they're able to attract success by providing services that bring them joy.

We welcome all salon clients with all textures and all ages. From an international curly hair educator to a first-year stylist, our providers range in education and experience. Stylists who work with us curate a Full Circle Service for their business. This allows our providers to scale their business beyond technique and fully scale the way that they want and need.

Welcome to Need + Co., where every. body. is welcome.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in the beauty industry for 13 years now. When I first began in this industry, I realized there was something so much more impactful that we could do besides cutting or coloring hair. The emotional, physical, and spiritual exchange we have with our clients is something we don't talk about enough. We have such a beautiful opportunity to change the world by simply changing our services.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Developing the Full Circle Service. It has been a labor of true love for humans. Changing the way we do business, the way we work with our customers, and the way we interact with others around us. These small bits of awareness change the game of business and truly will change the way the world does business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Remembering to stay self-aware. To stay in the moment. We get so stuck in the "have to's" and "shoulds" in business that we begin to lose our true selves. The moment you've compromised so much of yourself for the comfort of others, that was the hardest moment in business so far.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get clear on the life you WANT to live. I'm talking about your daily schedule, income, vacations, non-negotiables, etc.
  2. Figure out where you are RIGHT NOW.
  3. Trust yourself. You will have a million things to do, and every single thing has to be done. So, just get to it, ONE THING at a time.
