What's your business, and who are your customers?

Needle Play Acupuncture is an acupuncture clinic that is a space for members of the LGBTQ+, Leather, Kink, and NeuroQueer communities.

Tell us about yourself

As a trans person of color, I found Western medical offices to be more stressful and often scary places to be. I wanted to be a part of the change and solution to that problem. My choice to serve the Leather, Kink, NeuroQueer, and LGBTQ+ communities comes from me wanting to provide high-quality healthcare to the people in my world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So far, my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is to provide three locations for people to receive treatment. I have two private practice offices, one in San Francisco on Wednesdays and another in Oakland Thursday through Saturday. I also have a community clinic starting on the third Saturday in May, also in San Francisco.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Honestly, the admin is what is hard for me. It is very much giving “Jim, I’m a doctor, not an administrator” vibes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top 3 tips I would give anyone starting a business today? Let’s see, first, narrow down your market to who you really want to serve and be honest with yourself about that. Second, reach out to places that help new businesses get started, and don’t be afraid to lean on what they have to offer. For me, that was the Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District. Three: Network, network, network. Offering a service for a review or referral can bring so many new folx your way.
