Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Simon Royle, Technical Director of NJ Crush FC, located in Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an Elite all-girls soccer club that provides high-level soccer training for athletes aged 4-23 years old.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up playing soccer, getting to the highest level, and not being able to pursue that dream due to injury. I wanted to share my passion and love for soccer with others. I relish the opportunity to teach life lessons through soccer, and seeing those young players develop different skill sets is a huge motivator.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We grew from a small soccer club 4 or so teams to having 23+ teams and 15-20 employees.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Ensuring that the product we provide is consistent through every department and giving all the customers the best experience. Being the best and perfect is the most difficult to achieve, and the hardest is knowing sometimes you have done everything you can, yet that isn't the best in someone's eyes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a strategic plan, stick to your plan, and have your own interests at heart. Don't move away from the goal you set out to achieve.
  2. Don't grow too big too quickly. If growth happens quickly, get somebody you can trust that aligns with your values and ensure that you can share the responsibilities without being overbearing.
  3. Make time for yourself and your family. Don't let the business consume you because if you do, all you will have is a product, customers, and nobody to share that success with. Money, success, and happiness are not always aligned.
