Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jay Oppenheim, Founder of OPP Fitness, located in Boston, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I specialize in injury prevention and recovery training, aiming to help people develop better movement, strength, and overall fitness and physical function. My clients usually have a nagging ailment that is putting a ceiling on their progress. I often work with them during and/or post physical therapy. My clients are highly motivated to make improvements to their injuries and fitness.

Tell us about yourself

I got into this line of work because, as an athlete, over the years, I have had my fair share of injuries; this has motivated me to help reduce the incidence of injury and, when an injury happens, improve the recovery process and ceiling for as many people as I can help.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment is having satisfied clients who are getting results.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest for me now is social media and growing the virtual part of the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get mentors who are successful in the area of your business.
  2. Try to do as much as you can in different elements of your business in the beginning to learn, and then delegate/outsource tasks that you are not as good at and/or could be done more efficiently by someone else.
  3. Set up small short-term action-based goals that will help move you closer to larger, longer-term goals, and set aside time each week to work on these goals.
