Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shawn Marie Higgins, Owner of Osteopathic Wellness, located in Portland, ME, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an osteopathic physician, author, international lecturer, and energy & sound healer. I have pioneered merging energy and sound healing into formal medical education for medical doctors worldwide. My teachings focus on quantum physics, the communion of spirit and matter, and the evolution of human consciousness and intuition in harmony with nature.

My customers are largely students! I teach a variety of courses to include formal continuing medical education credits for medical doctors worldwide. I also do many courses for the general public.

I am the author of "The Human Body – A Biological Sound Healing Instrument, "Chapter 25 in Nutrition and Integrative Medicine for Clinicians, volume 2. I am currently working on my second publication, with a hopeful release date in 2024.

Tell us about yourself

For many years, I practiced osteopathic medicine and sound healing separately. As I continued my work, I realized that they were not separate at all! I began experiencing vibrational shifts and intuitive drives while practicing hands-on healing. As a writer, the biology of what I was feeling osteopathically as a palpatory sensation became a whole new way of perceiving health and reality as a whole. This information sort of wrote itself through me as I worked on articles and books. Now, here I am, pioneering a whole new medicine!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've accomplished the privilege of having a positive and healing effect on the lives of others.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Self-discipline in taking the initiative to make things happen!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The biggest tip is to DO WHAT YOU LOVE. You will naturally excel in doing what you love. You will also be more likely to stick with it for the long haul.
  2. Stay with it! EVERY business and every venture has ups and downs. Trust in the process and ride the waves of busy-slow, hectic-calm, grumpy-happy. Love all of it. The hard times teach you, and the easy times reward you!
  3. Accept help. We can't do it all alone! Hire specialists who know what they are doing and accept help from friends and family. ACCEPT HELP FROM CUSTOMERS! Their feedback is literally GOLD. And let them know you are learning from them. Even criticism is a gold mine. THANK your customers for helping you grow and making your business better. You will turn an unhappy customer into a happy one REALLY fast!
