What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called Performance Culture, and it's a gym and performance facility that I co-founded with my partner Max Hamilton. Our gym is unlike any other because we cater to everyone from casual gym-goers to professional athletes like IFBB pro bodybuilders, powerlifters, boxers, mixed martial artists, and much more. We're also home to elite trainers of all kinds and physical therapists who are dedicated to helping our clients reach their fitness, health, or rehabilitation goals.

Our ultimate goal with Performance Culture is to provide everything anyone could need when it comes to health, fitness, and wellness, all under one roof. We're a one-stop-shop for anyone looking to get fit and healthy, whether they're a retiree looking to stay active or a professional athlete looking to take their performance to the next level.

So, in a nutshell, our customers are anyone and everyone who is interested in improving their fitness and overall health. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming and inclusive gym where everyone can feel comfortable and confident in their fitness journey.

Tell us about yourself

Sure thing. For me, the story of how Performance Culture came goes back nearly a decade. Owning and founding a gym that I know can move the industry forward both commercially and across practices like mixed martial arts, which is a lifelong pursuit and passion of mine, was always something I wanted to accomplish.

But the journey of how I got here isn't for the faint of heart. I've faced a lot of obstacles and failures along the way, and it's those experiences that have really motivated me to keep going and keep pushing for success. I truly believe that failure and overcoming obstacles is the most necessary part of real personal success. Without it, you can't really learn and grow as a person.

So, when it comes to what motivates me each day, it's really about the challenge of it all. I wake up every morning excited to face whatever challenges come my way and to find creative solutions to the problems that arise. And I'm constantly learning from my failures and using those lessons to improve myself and my business.

At the end of the day, I'm just really passionate about helping people achieve their fitness goals and improve their overall health and well-being. And I believe that by overcoming obstacles and learning from failures, I can do just that with Performance Culture.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So far, my biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been ensuring we are working with the exact people we need and who have the character to maintain an unmatched quality as we scale our business as well as found additional subsidiary businesses. We have a deep trust with everyone currently involved in Performance Culture, and I believe that reality will carry us as far as we'd like to go.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The thing I've struggled with as a business owner the most is lifestyle balance, maintaining a friendship, and, ironically enough staying in shape. I have personal goals to still complete as a professional mixed martial art fighter over the next several years. Balancing that extreme with another has certainly been the most challenging aspect. Keeping a level head is certainly something I'm proud of, but that has been tested numerous times over the last 15 months.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't make fear-based decisions; instead, find certainty where you can and be willing to take big risks others won't.
  2. Make sure you are passionate about your business or aspects of your business. I mean deeply, unreasonably passionate; even something that appears to be a three-year commitment typically becomes a decades-long commitment one way or another.
  3. Don't allow others' unfounded doubts to convince you of something, or rather allow them to lead you away from what you know is the right decision. Hear them, take time to think, and consider what they're saying if they love you. Allow truthful answers to come to you. Find supreme confidence in exploring that, and then execute without hesitation. Do not be afraid to fail, but do your best to avoid having it come about. Make sure you trust your chosen team with your life. Failure is fundamental to achieving success, so don't always let that sway you.
