Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Arti Bedi Pullins, Founder, and CEO of Pundit Consultantz, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Pundit Consultantz is an operational, digital innovation, and digital transformation healthcare consultancy that also supports all patient-centric design work. Our customers are found throughout the continuum of the healthcare industry, including medical manufacturing, life sciences, and other sectors.

Tell us about yourself

I am a technology business innovation and problem solver at heart. I started my career almost 20 years ago in the tech industry, where I gravitated to the healthcare industry. My passion continues to stay in large problem solving, where I strategize with clients and provide solutions to complex issues. As you may imagine, there's no better industry in the United States that needs creative problem-solving than healthcare. I started my consultancy five years ago and still remain grateful to the very first healthcare/medical manufacturing clients that gave me the opportunity to prove my excellence. I love what I do; I love solving problems that make a direct impact on patients and patient care and creating solutions to provide better outcomes. This is what motivates me every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my greatest accomplishments is making it this far without any external funding, such as investor money or even angel capital. Pundit Consultantz is a pure self-owned self-funded, and self-driven business. I am a 100 percent Indian minority female owner, and it gives me great pride to grow this business from scratch.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Keeping the lights turned on! As a small business in high-growth mode, I constantly make sure that we have enough clients and that our pipelines for revenues continue to flow and grow. This was especially true in the first few years of when I was establishing my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Test the market before you start your business. My company began as a side hustle while still in corporate America. That gave me the space to first prove the model and my thesis for the need for Pundit Consultantz in the marketplace.
  2. Do not lose hope if the business is not scaling as fast as you thought it would when mapping it out on paper it would. Putting a business plan down on PowerPoint or on an excel sheet and making assumptions and forecasts for business growth is very different than how the market and your customers will actually engage with you.
  3. Last but definitely not least, ask for help! There's no reason to feel like you are alone on an entrepreneurial island or within your entrepreneurial journey. There are lots of us out there willing to partner, contribute, and give advice. So, reach out to other business owners, family, and friends and ask for assistance.
