What's your business, and who are your customers?

Purple Sugar Pastries provides baking kits of cakes, cookies, and other pastries that everyone, from beginners (including children) to the experienced baker, can make! Each kit has all of the premeasured dry ingredients and easy-to-follow instructions to make a delicious bakery-style treat right in your own home. Purple Sugar Pastries also provides printables and online tutorials that are full of tips and tricks to help make every baking adventure a sweet success.

Tell us about yourself

For as long as I can remember, I enjoyed being in the kitchen, but my original career path was teaching. I was given an opportunity to further my teaching career, but I realized my passion was in the kitchen. I decided to go to culinary school to improve my knowledge and confidence. Upon its completion, I started combining teaching with everything I made. I couldn’t help but share the things I had learned by making notes on recipes (or even sometimes realizing I was standing in the middle of the grocery store telling someone the difference between self-rising and all-purpose flour).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my biggest accomplishments is being able to say that I help people every day. It feels amazing to give someone else the knowledge to bake from scratch or explain why certain ingredients are used while baking. Smiles of accomplishment are the best.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I started this business without having any prior business training and during the pandemic. Was it a huge undertaking? Without a doubt! Yet I still wouldn’t change a thing. I continue to spend countless hours researching, training, and reading. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research. Never stop learning. Our world constantly changes, and there is always something new to learn and implement.
  2. Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Being a business owner is one of the hardest things I could have ever done. At first, I tried doing everything by myself. It just showed me how little knowledge I had and how fast I could burn myself out.
  3. Be your own biggest cheerleader. Always remember your why and never stop moving forward. If you need an extra “Go get’em,” don’t hesitate to message me.
