Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Jeanty, Founder of Reserved and Polished, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Reserved and Polished. We are a wellness and beauty brand that brings nontoxic nail care, facial and massage treatments to our clients through in-home services and events. I wanted to simplify the process of accessing personalized and "indulgent" treatments by bringing them into your home, hotel, or workplace. I don't think we should have to sacrifice wellness and beauty, even if we have a busy life. I want self-care to become an accessible, automatic, and integrated part of one's lifestyle.

Tell us about yourself

My background started in finance. In 2009, after years in the finance industry, I was laid off due to the financial crisis. I then decided to take my business background and create an artist representation agency. I represented from sports stylists to brand influencers. After years of working with talent, I wanted to create a wellness and beauty brand where I can help busy New Yorkers include more self-care in their lives. Reserved and Polished was born.

I am motivated by our customers and serving them with the self-care they are looking for. There's also something great about getting a new client through a referral. That says so much about the quality of service we bring.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When you're a business owner, sometimes you forget about the many accomplishments you've had. You can get lost in the grind of it all. I like to start with something that can seem small, but it's BIG to me. Through the years, I've grown to appreciate my perseverance as my biggest accomplishment. Building a business is easy. It's getting up every day, actually, most days, with the dedication to keep going, that's hard.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Owning a business is hard. I won't even lie to you and say otherwise, but it's worth it. But back to it being hard. You don't only need the tenacity, but the financial part can sometimes be the hardest. In order to grow most businesses, capital is needed, and without that, you realize you can be in the space of slower growth.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build a tribe. Those that can relate to where you are as a business owner, and you guys can help each other along the way.
  2. If you need motivation, clarity, or to talk some things through, don't hesitate to invest in yourself (if you have the funds) and get yourself a therapist or a coach. This journey can have (many) rough moments.
  3. Do your research before going into the industry. Learn from other businesses in your industry's mistakes. It's cheaper than making them yourself.
