What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called Right Brain Loves Left, and my customers are small business owners and entrepreneurs. I consult with and train small business owners to use both their analytic skills (left brain) and creative skills (right brain) to elevate their time, project, and marketing management. I want them to scale their business by learning to be more strategic about their energy and assets!

Tell us about yourself

I started a blog in 2007 and saw so much success with it that brands started asking me to write for them and, after that, hired me to manage their social media as well. I'm an organized person, so I was soon managing some of their business projects, too! I started sharing some of my time management skills with my clients so that they could prioritize and tackle projects that were important to them as business owners. After years of experience, I learned that the way to see the most success was by leveraging both your creative and analytical skills, and this has led me to share actionable techniques with my students and clients. I love being a small business owner, and my passion - what motivates me every day - is to see fellow small business owners succeed.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hands down, seeing the incredible difference that my experience has made for fellow small businesses. One of my clients shared that prior to our working together, her business was in an operational chokehold that would not allow it to grow due to inefficient processes and systems. Since collaborating, her business doubled in size in one year; she has a great team, and the right systems further carry her business to further growth and success. Another client has launched social media campaigns and an updated website that brings her new work. She's also digitally organized - saving her time and money - and has a sharp focus on the projects that will be most successful for her. I have a tear in my eye just thinking of the successes they've seen. It makes me deliriously happy!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time management - or, as I sometimes prefer to call it, energy management - can be a hardship for small business owners. Entrepreneurs are expected to be experts at marketing, sales, recruitment, bookkeeping, and more. It's important to set boundaries, use better processes, and learn techniques that help a small business succeed without the owner burning out.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Great question! Here are my tips.

  1. If starting a business, research your business name. Make sure you can legally use it and also that it is available on social media platforms.
  2. If running a business, review your social media platforms. I recommend not having a presence on all of them. Research the pros and cons of each and pick the 2-3 you can nurture consistently.
  3. If growing a business, set boundaries. Take an honest look at your priorities - and if an opportunity arises, that doesn't support those, strongly consider saying 'no.'
