Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Liza Kaplan Montanino, Founder of Rock-a-Bye Baby Sleep, located in Briarcliff Manor, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Rock-a-Bye Baby Sleep is a sleep consulting service that works with families wherever they are located. Its owner and founder, Liza Montanino, is a certified sleep consultant through the Center for Pediatric Sleep Management, specializing in newborn, infant, toddler, and preschooler sleep. Liza is also a newborn care professional and trained lactation educator.

Tell us about yourself

I struggled to get my son to fall asleep when he was a newborn, and sleep deprivation really took a toll on me and led to a severe case of PPD and PPA. I realized there is a lack of support and systems in place for moms postpartum in this country, and each day I'm motivated by the volume of moms seeking support--across a spectrum of ages, cultures, countries, etc.-- and how universal the desire is for all parents to help their babies thrive. By giving parents the tools to improve their little ones' sleep and teaching healthy sleep habits from birth, I aim to make parenthood a bit easier so that parents can show up as their best selves for their children.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is helping moms across the globe achieve better sleep for their families and giving them a better outlook on parenthood as a result. I've been able to leave my corporate 9-5 and transition into work that changes and improves the lives of parents on a global level.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The constant search for new clients and wide name recognition.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make connections and network - and treat those things like a daily to-do item.
  2. Broaden your definition of success.
  3. Celebrate big and little wins, and treat each struggle as a chance to learn and do something different in the future.
