Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rodman Walsh, a licensed marriage and family therapist based in Redondo Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own and operate a private therapy practice in Redondo Beach, CA. I provide psychotherapy and mental health services to a wide range of patients and clients throughout the state of California.

Tell us about yourself

I love the work that I do and feel very grateful and fortunate to help others improve their lives. I was inspired by another therapist well before I got into the mental health field. They gave me the courage to take a chance, step into the unknown and make transformative changes in my professional and personal life. I knew my goal was to one day have my own practice, and I kept making strides toward that vision. I'm motivated each day by the positive change and growth I see in my patients and the opportunity to learn and grow myself.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say my biggest accomplishment is building my practice completely from the ground up. I had to be very creative and learn many new skills from a business and technology perspective while facing early budget challenges. It was certainly stressful and challenging at times, as I faced doubt and uncertainty, but I am very proud of my willingness to stay in action and continue to follow through on my goals.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is managing all aspects of the business while trying to grow in new ways. I think the biggest thing I've learned is to remain consistent and patient without judging the process and myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Dream big and start small. You have to start at the very beginning and move forward from there.
  2. Stay humble and receptive. Network and talk to other businesses and owners to see what has worked for them and how they built their businesses in a similar industry.
  3. Map it out and visualize how you will do it. Be specific with your time and stay accountable to yourself. Focus on progress and stay in action.
