Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nancy Gulizia, Owner of Sugar Mamma Caramels, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sugar Mamma Caramels + Cookies has something for everyone, even vegan and GF!

Tell us about yourself

I have been making my signature Sea Salt Caramels since 2009. I won a candy contest years later and was inspired to start my business. I am motivated by the joy on my customers' faces when they taste my delicious treats!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is starting from scratch (pun intended)! I didn't know anything about starting a food business, but I figured it out, and now my desserts have won Favorite Dessert in San Diego for five years in a row!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Doing it all myself as a sole proprietor is the hardest thing about being a business owner. From recipe development, cooking, cleaning, wrapping, packaging, marketing, you name it... I do it all myself!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a passion for what you do and believe in your products wholeheartedly.
  2. Network with other small businesses in your area.
  3. Be willing to learn and grow.

Where can people find you and your business?
