Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patience George, Founder of Sabi Startups, located in Kigali, Rwanda.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Sabi Startups, we believe that every entrepreneur deserves a chance to succeed, and we are committed to providing them with the necessary support. Our goal is to connect aspiring founders and early-stage entrepreneurs with a vibrant community of individuals who can assist them in validating their ideas, providing accountability, and offering valuable skills. Additionally, we develop and provide resources to help founders overcome the hurdles they may encounter along their startup journey.

By emphasizing the power of human capital rather than financial capital, we not only support entrepreneurs in pursuing their dreams and building thriving businesses, but we also foster a culture of innovation and creativity where we're all constantly learning and growing together.

Our resources range from merch for founders to e-books, courses and games.

Tell us about yourself

I had my first job at 14 and witnessed the challenges faced by the business and its owner. Taking mental notes, I began to understand the reasons behind business stagnation and failure. After completing my degree, I joined a startup where we spent nearly two years struggling to launch a product. This experience deepened my research into the causes of product and startup failures. Since then, I have developed a strong passion for startups, driven by the thrill of bringing ideas to life and growing businesses every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Using my subsidized service model, I trained two individuals with no prior marketing knowledge. In just a month, they successfully secured their first jobs in a startup, gaining invaluable hands-on experience and earning a paycheck.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The need to wear multiple hats and juggle various responsibilities. It can sometimes feel overwhelming, leaving little room for breaks or downtime.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you work with clients, it is important to create boundaries early on.
  2. The earlier your business can run without you, the better. Consciously design processes and systems that do not require 100% of your presence.
  3. Study why businesses in your industry fail.
