Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daniel Sedran, Founder and Owner of First Line Physiotherapy, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy clinic located in the northern part of Toronto. We serve clients of all ages and capabilities by helping them overcome their pain, injury, and physical limitations. Through one-on-one manual therapy, modalities, and progressive home exercise programming, we help people get back to doing the things that they love. Our friendly and personable therapists and administrative team work closely together to help people have a great experience while progressing through their care plans.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Daniel Sedran, and I am the clinic owner and one of the physiotherapists at First Line Physiotherapy. I began working on establishing the practice in April of 2020, and we opened our doors in November of 2020. Since then, the clinical and administrative team has grown to 2 physiotherapists, two massage therapists, and a team of 3 administrators. As a healthcare practitioner, I remain motivated by the desire I see in my clients to want to improve and get back to their typical activities and routine. As a business owner, I am motivated to help my team feel supported in their practices and feel fulfilled by working in the company. Together, my motivation is my belief that my clients and team deserve an environment that contributes positively to their lives and one that appreciates the unique value that each of them brings to the team.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is having gradually built a team that shares similar philosophies in their clinical practice, as well as in how each client should be treated. I am confident that regardless of who someone is interacting with at the clinic, they are going to be treated with empathy and respect. This has a lot to do with who each of the team members are as individuals, but recruiting them took time and is something that I'm quite proud of.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

You need to wear a lot of hats. In the early stages of being a business owner, especially when you are also responsible for proving the service that that business offers, it can be quite busy. Between providing the service, and managing the accounting, marketing, business operations, etc., it is very important to focus on time management and scheduling in order to prioritize tasks and keep track of all elements of the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Seek Mentorship. It is highly likely that whatever industry your business exists in, someone has walked a similar path in the past. Learning from those who have done it before can help you get ideas on how to do and how not to do certain things when getting started and in the early stages.
  2. Understand your finances and expenses. Costs add up quickly, and if you aren't careful, they can far outpace your income, especially in the early stages. Project your numbers, track them carefully, and then compare them to your projections repeatedly.
  3. Stick to what you know. For myself, I did not know anything about web design, so hiring a professional to help with this at the beginning was vital. This allowed me to focus on the tasks I knew I was going to be able to do efficiently rather than having to waste my time learning a whole new craft. You can build those skills over time, but hiring within your financial constraints from the beginning is critical.
