Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sherry Miller, Co-Owner of S Music Studio LLC, located in Middletown, DE, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a music studio where we teach private and group lessons to people of all ages. We teach voice, piano, drums, guitar, bass, violin, cello, ukulele, and flute.

Tell us about yourself

After 12 years of homeschooling my two daughters, I decided to go back to teaching piano lessons. I hired my first teacher 16 years ago, and now I have 15 teachers and over 200 students. I love running a business and look forward to coming up with new ideas to help the business grow.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I used to have my business in my home, but 2 years ago, I moved into my own building that we totally remolded from a decrepit old barn to a beautiful new facility. I am very proud of how it turned out and love hearing so many positive comments from families who come to the studio.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the hardest thing is when I have to let a teacher go because they aren't a good fit. Keeping a certain atmosphere and culture is very important; some teachers just don't fit into that culture.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I suggest going for it. There isn't anything quite as fulfilling as business ownership.

  1. Start small, doing what you love best.
  2. Depending on the type of business, there are lots of ways to avoid adversities that doesn't cost much, if anything. Keep your name in front of your audience.
  3. Manage your time, so your business doesn't consume your whole life. Keep things in balance.
