Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fitness and health but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kate Kuss, Founder of Soul & Steady Yoga Parlour, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Soul & Steady Yoga Parlour is a destination and experience that revolves around yoga, meditation, community, and growth. Most interaction with my customers happens online with daily live classes and philosophy. Yoga is more than a posture. Customers are the type of students who want to learn more about themselves.

Tell us about yourself

I've been a yoga teacher for over a decade, but I'm two years of being an entrepreneur. I created a yoga brand that incorporates more than just the postures. Yoga is a space that allows me to share my talent by helping others build strength from the inside out. I spent many years working in Corporate Advertising & Media, and I'm grateful for the experience. I've always marched to the beat of my drum, so branching out and starting my yoga brand feels right. It's not easy to create your brand because of the natural emotions that come with it, such as fear and doubt, but those are just fleeting emotions. I had to dig deep into my heart and soul to follow through. I believe in the style of yoga I teach and how I share the ancient practice in modern times, so I had to keep going, Inch by Inch. Step by step. My motto is "Inch by Inch; life is a cinch. Yard by yard, life is too hard."

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Watching my community grow is my biggest accomplishment as a business owner. Knowing that I am creating content that I want to use is my driving factor. I love getting feedback from my members who use my writings, spiritual lessons, and physical classes to help them in their lives.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I'm always thinking about my business and brand. Always. I must learn to relax and shut down when it's time to turn it off. It makes me laugh because I teach yoga and meditation, and I still can't relax! My business's success relies on the energy I put into it, but I also deserve to shut it off.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be clear on your WHY. Your business will always grow with you, but the core of why you are doing it should be strong.
  2. Listen to others but follow your gut.
  3. Keep trying, keep going, and keep growing.
