What's your business, and who are your customers?
Sweetbakes Cafe- We are a cafe in Poughkeepsie, NY, that specializes in custom cakes with a strong focus on wedding and special celebration cafes. We also serve luxury treats and pastries along with waffles, crepes, and specialty coffee. Our customers are members of the Hudson Valley community with Hudson valley tourists from time to time.
Tell us about yourself
Our very first brick-and-mortar shop was established in 2017 in the Village of Wappingers Falls, but our story began many years before, with baking cakes and treats for the birthdays of our three beautiful, very active children. Our cakes eventually developed into a small in-home business as we gained buzz with friends and family. Finally, My husband and I- decided to take the leap, and we both left our jobs in healthcare to officially open Sweetbakes Cafe! We count our blessings every day that we have true supporters, and we appreciate your continuous patronage.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Every day brings challenges. Thus far, battling through the COVID-19 pandemic was a tremendous accomplishment. We were unsure if we could've even stayed afloat relocating to our current storefront. We've had unbelievable support.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Uncontrollable challenges are our biggest bottlenecks. Covid-19, Supply chain shortages, and inflation of rising costs has to be our biggest obstacle.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find your why. Without it, it's all meaningless; a why can drive you and keep you focused.
- Plan accordingly, research, and know your market.
- Fundraise and have the necessary capital for start-up & growth.
