What's your business, and who are your customers?
I teach the healing art or exercise of Tai Chi, Qigong, and meditation. My students range from 6-year-old to 106 and all age groups in between, both men and women from all over the United States and thirty-some countries.
Tell us about yourself
I am a journalist on the healing art of Tai Chi, Qigong, and meditation. I have interviewed hundreds of scientists, masters, experts, and practitioners and fully realized the health benefits. With that, I am extremely passionate about sharing my own practice with others. I started teaching more than 15 years ago, but I never considered my teaching as a business but as a way of serving humanity. I have worked with more than 10,000 people globally, both online and in-person. Many of my students came to me because of health issues. My biggest reward is when they tell me how their symptoms reduce or disappear, when they no longer need their diabetes medicine or painkillers, or when they can sleep better or no longer need to see doctors for physical or mental conditions.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have trained and certified people to become Tai Chi and Qigong instructors. I consider that a big accomplishment because, through their teaching effort, more people are being served.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I am a laid-back person, and it is hard for me to promote myself. Fortunately, through word of mouth, my student base has been growing organically.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
I truly believe that we have to believe in our service or product that is meaningful and important. We have to be passionate about it even if it is not profitable at the beginning. We have to treat clients with care and respect.
