Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bradley Davis, founder, and CEO of The bKYND Company, located in Nashville, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The bKYND Company, or bKYND (“be kind”), is a high-end health and wellness company for students and young professionals ages 12 to 25. Our Mission is to provide affordable, life-enriching physical, mental, and emotional health and wellness services to young people everywhere through both brick-and-mortar boutique health clubs and a one-of-a-kind interactive digital platform.

bKYND is the first and only company in the world that offers high-end [holistic] health clubs just for teens and young adults. Through our holistic offering of professional services - i.e., group fitness classes (HIIT, yoga/meditation, core sculpt, etc.), personal & small group training, nutrition coaching, and [individual] mental health counseling and life coaching - we are able to nurture and support the healthy development and continued growth of [countless] teens and young adults overall physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Building a happier, healthier tomorrow is what bKYND is all about. Our incredible team is focused on providing tomorrow’s leaders with the tools and resources they need [now] to become the happiest, healthiest, most confident, and successful version of themselves. This is how we plan on changing the world --One young leader at a time.

Tell us about yourself

I started The bKYND Company because I know what it feels like to need help but not be able to get it. I didn’t want those younger than me to suffer unnecessarily like I did. As both a former student-athlete and childhood cancer survivor, I have experienced total highs and ultimate lows, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. My compiled life experience has repeatedly shown me the unmatched importance of maintaining one’s physical, mental and emotional health. It’s true what they say: “health is wealth.”

I believe the health, happiness, and success of all children and young people need to be, and then always remain, our top priority as a people. The bKYND Company is my way of doing more than just talking it’s my way of contributing to the change I want to see in this world. I don’t currently have kids, but one day I hope to have some. Therefore, I feel as though it’s on me to begin making this world a better place for my [hopefully future] kids.

Oh,…and I never did like working for someone else. I like being my own boss.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment thus far has been securing my first three investors and raising $40k in our first pre-seed fundraising round.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I’d say one of the hardest parts about being a solo entrepreneur, especially in the beginning when you’re just getting your footing, is staying organized and knowing what, when, why, and how to prioritize the completion of all you have to do. This is also very applicable when such tasks cross-subject lines like legal and accounting or fundraising and marketing and branding.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Your startup [idea] should always be deeply rooted in both passion and purpose.
  2. If you don’t have a co-founder, immediately find at least one, if not two, trusted and experienced mentors. And even if you have a co-founder, find yourselves some mentors!
  3. Stay driven to achieve your [end] goal, but remain focused on completing the task at hand. Progress takes time. Greatness takes patience.
