Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jason Falls, Founder & Executive Producer of The Marketing Podcast Network, located in Louisville, KY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Marketing Podcast Network is an association of marketing-related podcasts that support one another's growth through cross-promotions, revenue share, and community collaboration. Our customers are advertisers who wish to market to marketers because 100% of our audience is marketers. We also provide podcast editing and creative services to podcasters and creators, regardless of topic.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been a communicator. Whether it's writing, broadcasting, or creating other types of content, I enjoy helping people understand marketing and communications to help them communicate better. When I see my advice for helping people get better, it makes me feel useful.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every day at MPN is a big accomplishment because the podcasters or advertisers I work with trust me to help them grow their businesses. I don't take that lightly. Before MPN, I'd say my best business owner moment was successfully exiting a boutique agency in 2014 by selling to my business partner.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Working with limited resources. I've never been anything but bootstrapped, so I have to take on each day with an attitude of doing a lot with a little. If I had just a little bit of capital to invest in the business, I could get a lot farther, a lot faster, but the journey is the fun part.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't forget to take time to take care of yourself. Working 60-80 hours a week and not resting, exercising, meditating, spending time with your loved ones, etc., will make your work less effective and destroy your life outside of work.
  2. Appreciate the now, not just the idea of where you want to go. We'd all love to make it big and be rich, right? But if we don't appreciate the work it takes to get there and appreciate what we have along the way, we're wasting what we have.
  3. Don't let people take a piece of your business unless there's no other way to fuel what you want to build. You may build it a lot slower, but you may not have much left to call your own if you err on the side of speed.
