Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in financial services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Eduek Brooks, Founder of TWO SIDES OF A DIME INC., located in Brampton, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Financial Educator, and I simplify complex finance topics. I teach women how to take control of their finances and build a profitable investment portfolio to fund their goals so they can live their best lives without getting into debt. I have a 1:1 coaching service for women who need guidance on optimizing their cash flow, paying off debt, and building their investment portfolio. I teach an online course that helps people become self-directed Investors and build a profitable investment portfolio. I am also running a Deb-free challenge for women who want debt freedom.

Tell us about yourself

Four years ago, I was in $47,000 of debt and had just gotten laid off from my job. I had no emergency savings to help sustain me during my income loss. I decided to take control of my finances because I never wanted to feel that hopeless again. I started documenting my debt-free journey on social media, and many people following me will message me saying they were inspired by my journey and wanted to learn how to take control of their finances. So I started sharing money tips and teaching people how to manage their finances in a way that is easy to digest and seamless to implement.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is the results my clients and students get. I have helped over 100 women pay off debt and start investing.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Having to wear multiple hats, being the CEO, COO, CFO, teacher, marketing director, content creator, social media manager, copywriter, and customer service rep. It's a lot to handle as a solopreneur.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You don't have to have a niche before you start. You won't know your niche until you test out different products/services to determine what resonates the most with people.
  2. Fail fast and often. The more you fail, the more you learn what doesn't work for your business and clients. Failure is your best friend.
  3. Start Lean. You don't need all the fancy tech or a website to start your business, especially when you have a low-profit margin. Instead, start with the most basic (free) tools available, and as your business grows, you can upgrade your tech.
